Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said that as part of the initiative, the number of surveillance cameras would be increased from the existing 80 to 160 soon. The pan-tilt-zoom cameras could be used for regulation, monitoring as well as enforcement.
With the objective of increasing use of technology in traffic management, city police is implementing eight components as Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) initiatives, which are being integrated at "Interim Traffic Management Centre (TMC)" as a pilot project.
Unveiling the centre on Monday, Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said that as part of the initiative, the number of surveillance cameras would be increased from the existing 80 to 160 soon. These pan-tilt-zoom cameras could be used for regulation, monitoring as well as enforcement.
These, along with the five enforcement cameras, would capture violations of over speed, signal jumping and crossing of stop line and transmit the evidences to TMC, he said.
Out of 299 signals, 163 signals had already been connected to TMC, he said.
Signal progression method (partial synchronisation) is used to inter-connect signals, which are located within a distance of 100 metres with each other, to minimise delays.
Area Traffic Control (ATC) system has been planned on 14 corridors, which carry about 50 per cent of total peak hour traffic. The system detects presence of vehicles at junctions using detector loops that are laid beneath the road surface, so that duration of green light is more to the direction with higher volume of vehicles, Bidari said.
As a pilot project Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) is trying virtual loops based on still cameras to detect presence of vehicles at junctions, he said.
Traffic police is also working on installation of 20 Variable Message Sign Boards (VMS) to relay traffic situation and incidents to road users, he said.
'Traffice Scan' is another advanced tool that enables real time congestion information on the roads to motorists, besides Parking Information System, Integrated Complaint Management System and Enforcement Management System, he said.
